One of the most enjoyable features of backgammon is the friendly atmosphere prevailing in the vast majority of games and tournaments. More experienced players help the novices learn the rules of the game, and all types of players generally accept in good spirits if the game does not look as if they are going to be a winner.
It therefore may seem superfluous that such a thing as backgammon etiquette is required. However, since new participants are always joining the game and might not have learned what is expected, and even seasoned players at times forget themselves, it is worthwhile noting a few of the basic principals governing acceptable behavior.
As in all games, whether played for money or fun, each player should play in an honest and sporting fashion. Thus, although there may be temptations, especially where a great deal of money is at stake, to tamper with the dice, such acts or even consideration of doing this kind of thing has to be considered totally out of bounds.
Each player should always consider the other backgammon player, and try to imagine how they would like their opponent to behave and act accordingly. Thus although it is proper to think before making a move, don’t take forever to decide. Also, don’t pick up the doubling cube without the intention of offering a double. Wanting to see the look on the other player’s face and so better judging his situation is not sufficient excuse.
There are many other aspects of decent behavior that should be second nature, such as not trying to disturb the opposing player when they are thinking of what move to make, and always speaking to them in a polite and respectful manner.
